Cincinnati's Calling
When my grandfather, Antonios, arrived at Ellis Island in 1916
from Greece, he couldn't even say Cincinnati, let alone imagine
living there. Nonetheless, he moved to Ohio where some of his
relatives resided. He worked in a variety of jobs and supported
his family through the Great Depression. He and his wife, Flora,
raised three children and seven grandchildren, who all went on to
attend college. He became an American citizen in 1928 and loved
this country for the opportunities it provided him. Now, years
later, those opportunities have allowed me to pursue my dreams by
moving to New York, the place where my grandfather's American
odyssey began. In his honor, my family placed his name on the
Wall of Honor at Ellis Island.
